Born today, it took 1 1/2 years of development to get a new stable release called TWiki-4.0.0 (Dakar). Kudos to all contributors who made this happen!
This release is the a major step forward since its predecessor TWiki-04Sep2004 (Cairo). Please have a look at the
full release notes to get more details on what is new and what has changed.
As you can see this is the first release following a new naming scheme that starts counting at 4.0.0 as this is the
fourth major release counting TWiki/Athens as 1.0.0, TWiki/Beijing as 2.0.0
and TWiki/Cairo as 3.0.0 releases. With the release of 4.0.0 a new
development cycle will start heading towards TWiki/Edinburgh which will
be a 5.0.0 release. In between there will be a TWiki-4.0.1 following soon
which is a bug fixing and maintenance release as more people will test
the new engine. Nevertheless, the Dakar engine is ... awesome ... (what shall I say) and a rock solid way to support any of your wacky-wiki installations and ways how to use wiki technologies. So go out and upgrade
your TWiki/Cairo installation
now.
Seriously, most plugins have been
adjusted to work with the new engine so that you are not trapped into using
your old deployments til the end of forever. Even if you have customized non-public plugins running on your intranet you should be able to use it
in the new engine as a lot of care has been taken to be backwards compatible.
The APIs have been revamped and extended to grant more performance
and flexibility. Even though you don't see it
directly the
inner values have been improving tremendously. Lots of stuff has been straightened up and brought to a new level of quality you can build on -- besides all the new features which are there.
Alright,
1 1/2 years is a long cycle and now it is time to draw a deep
breath and
have a party.
